Saturday, Sabrina, one of us at PRRHR, was approached with an offer we simply could not refuse. We are very thankful that we were asked to take in this gorgeous 13 year old Devils Garden Mustang by a very caring and understanding individual, who had nothing but the best of intentions for him and his future. While we are still learning more of his past, we do know that he was gathered up at the age of 10 years old from a place in Alturas, California by the name of Devil's Garden / Montgomery Creek. This beautiful Mustang was bounced around over the last 3 years from home to home, trainer to trainer before fortunately finding his last owner and then coming here. Once he settles in, we will be having his DNA tested and try to understand more of his past, his genetic make-up as well as his family history, perhaps even learning if his family is still out there in the wild or even in homes themselves. We will also read his file and see if perhaps we can learn his name and any further information. For now our main priority is to allow him to decompress in his new surroundings and feel our love. We will continue to update with any additional information that we obtain and hope that you too become invested in his future as well.
I'll add some additional information below that explains more about this particular Mustang and his original territory.
**Where do Devils Garden Mustangs come from?
The Cleveland Bay also plays a prominent part in the genetics of Devil's Garden Horses. This breed originated in the Cleveland district of Yorkshire, England in the 17th century.
**History. Wild horses have been present on the Devil's Garden Plateau since shortly after the first pioneers arrived. Many of the early horses escaped from settlers or were released when their usefulness as domestic animals ended. The first roundup occurred as early as 1889.
**What is a Devils Garden Mustang?
Mustangs that hail from Devil's Garden are known to be sturdy, have great attitudes and personality and are good prospects to grow up to be great trail horses because their ancestors evolved in the rough terrain of the Garden.
