At Palomino Ridge Ranch Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, we love helping weanlings who have been torn away from their mothers way too soon and thrown into the terrifying environment of slaughter pipeline auctions and kill pens. While it is horrible that any horse gets dumped at auctions and kill pens, we feel it is beyond awful and definitely cruel that human beings would dump these babies who have only been alive for a very short time, terrifying them and exposing them to horrible illnesses their little bodies cannot fight off and to injuries from being trampled and beat up by big horses. While we do our best to rush in and save these babies and comfort them and nurse them back to good health, it is absolutely heartbreaking when the damage is too great and they don't survive. We try to rescue as many youngsters as donations will allow. We love to be a part of their story - to love them, to nurture them, to meet their needs and to teach them that there are good, loving people in this world. In most cases, we keep the weanlings and yearlings we help until they are 2 years old. We choose to give these precious little ones safety, security, love and training into their 2 year old year, to give them time to grow in a safe and tranquil environment, and the skills they need to secure a lifetime home.
